This millennium marked the start of a new urban era, while two-thirds of the world’s population is predicted to be existing in urban areas.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1672118999912{padding-bottom: 1.5% !important;}”]With reference to Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), that is, Sustainable Cities and Communities, it is estimated that urban areas account for 70 percent of the world’s gross domestic product, generating a large share of economic growth. The unexpected growth of cities and growing rural-to-urban migration have led to a thriving mega-city in the developing world.

In 2014, there were 28 mega-cities, home to a total of 453 million people. At the same time, slum settlements are also becoming a more substantial problem in the urban life of developing countries, with people living in slums going from 792 million in 2000 to an estimated 880 million in 2014. It is predicted that about 90% of urban growth in Asia and Africa is putting pressure on freshwater supplies, sewage, the living environment, and public health (SDGs Goal 11).

In a rapidly urbanizing world, the need for a sustainable settlement, particularly for the poor and low-income groups in developing countries, especially Indonesia, is clearly indispensable. Many Indonesian metropolitans’ spatial constructs segregated poor and low-income groups, challenging them to equal access to economic opportunities, housing, and basic services. Since the reform era in 1999 (government period of 1999-2004), the government of Indonesia attempted to alleviate those inequalities through several housing and settlement policies and programs aimed at providing secure tenure.

Nevertheless, after more than four periods or 20 years, these policies and programs have failed to meet the objectives. Census data by 2020 shows the growing housing backlog as well as the increasing area of slums settlements. The government at all levels could not meet the needs of the poor and low-income commuters that affordable housing would be delivered in a liberal urban market. Existing policies that mainly promoted private developers and contractor-driven development in reality only served middle- and upper-income groups.

Accordingly, it should be realized that sustainable development cannot be achieved without significantly transforming the way we build and manage our human settlements, mostly in urban areas. That is an overview of the future of urban spaces as human habitats for productive and safe human living in the biosphere. It addresses slums, housing, human settlement management and planning, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and urban economies as the challenges in human settlement development.

On another side, architecture education has an important role in supporting the achievement of SGDs. It has goals that are in line with the Goal 11 of SDGs, which is to build cities and settlements that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. This is also stated in the SAPPD of Institut Teknologi Bandung’s mission: “Creating, sharing, and applying science and technology as well as producing human resources in the field of planning, designing and developing superior sustainable built environment policies to make Indonesia and the world a better place.”

Thus, as urbanization continues to increase at a rapid pace, it is crucial that we develop sustainable communities that are inclusive, safe, and resilient. Sustainable Human Settlements: Create Inclusive, Safe, and Resilient Habitat, then become the topic of this conference that will bring to be explored through a wide range of disciplines and the latest research and innovative approaches in creating sustainable human settlements. This seminar aims to gather academicians, researchers, and professionals to address these issues in accordance with the principle of a comprehensive and multidiscipline approach.

As we know, the industry is a key driver in the economic, societal, and green transitions many developing countries are experiencing, with aims beyond efficiency and productivity. It should place the worker’s welfare at the center of new technologies to provide prosperity beyond jobs and growth regarding the limits of the planet. Industry 5.0 then balances the existing industry 4.0 by specifically putting research and innovation at the transition to a sustainable, human-centric, and resilient industry and urban living. So, the other purpose of this seminar is also to combine the concepts of sustainable human settlements and industry 5.0 targeting the contribution of the industry to a prosperous modern digital-based urban society.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
